من يحب بغداد الخالدة، يعرف أن لها وجوهاً حضارية عدة. فهناك الفنون والأدب، والابداع في النمط المعيشي، لتفاجئك بعبث مقلق أو حلو. والحال أن أهلها عابثون بامتياز، لكن من دون مجون أو فحش. لقد كانت هذه المدينة نوّاسية بامتياز قبل أن تغتصب وتُخصى وتصاب بالجهل والتخلف والخوف. وعلى الرغم من مسحة الحزن الجميل الذي يغطيها، فهي لا تنام ليلا. أصوات البستات العراقية وقراءة المقام في الزوارق والمقاهي يتردد صداهما على الشاطئين، وفي الجزر الصيفية المؤقتة التي تظهر في الصيف وتختفي عند ارتفاع المناسيب في الشتاء والربيع. شواطيء دجلة لا تهجع، نهاراً للرياضة، وليلا للكيف. الكيف المغربي لم يكن معروفاً في العراق. المجون ساد في أوساط حديثي النعمة في العقود الأخيرة الذين هم من مستهلكي فنون الغجر ومجونهم الرخيص...
Nostos: Tale of a Street in Baghdad
Those who love Baghdad know of her many civilized faces. There are the arts and literature, an ensuing creativity that instils in one either anxiety or awe, her people ever distinctly vivacious, but never excessively or shamelessly. This city was Nawwassi before it was raped, castrated, and run over by ignorance, regression and fear.
Yet, despite the layer of a sweet sadness that is suspended over it, the city does not sleep at night. The sounds of the readings of the Maqqams in the boats and the coffee shops reverberate across the river's shores.
Temporary islands appear in the summer and disappear during the winter and spring with the water's fluctuating levels. The banks of the Tigris do not rest; daytime is for sports and nighttime for pleasure, for vice was unheard of then. Decadence, however, has taken hold of the nouveau riche, consumers of vice and base pleasures, and has transformed Baghdad shamelessly in the last few decades...
